Comedian Dave Chappelle is in the midst of a 16 show residency at Radio City Music Hall in New York, NY. This residency is commemorating his thirtieth anniversary in comedy. For one night only (Thursday, August 10, 2017), he held a party at House of Vans in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, which was free to attend if you RSVP'd in advance. The evening featured sets by DJs (DJ Trauma, DJ D-Nice, and DJ Stretch Armstrong), live graffiti, and free drinks. There was also surprise set from Brooklyn's own Talib Kweli.
I've managed to spend most of my summer at House of Vans this year and when this show was announced earlier this week, I knew I had to be there. I haven't had the opportunity to photograph Dave over the years but I've been a fan of his comedy for a long time and was in the audience during his last big party in Brooklyn. The images that I captured at HOV last night appear in the gallery above.
Chappelle was billed as a host which meant no stand up comedy but considering those who were there last night got to see him dance and sing along to the music the DJs played, it felt as if we were watching someone who seemed to be letting loose and having the time of his life because he didn't have to work at all that night.
