On Thursday, May 17, 2018, there was a celebration of the life and music of David Bowie at House of Yes in Bushwick. The dance party featured DJs, aerialists, and a beauty parlor (where one could be made up to look like Bowie).

I photographed some of the people who attended the event for BTR and the full gallery is now available here.

On Friday, May 18, 2018, House of Vans in Brooklyn, NY hosted a Girls Skate Jam from 5-7:30PM where young girls and women were invited to skate around the space. Specific vendors were invited to sell their merchandise while a DJ played songs during the event. Artist Robin Eisenberg, one of the first women to contribute to Thrasher Magazine, sold her art, pins, and patches. After the Skate Jam ended, The Kills performed.

I covered the event for BrooklynVegan and more images, along with photos from the Chicago edition, are now available here.

On Saturday, February 24, 2018, NYC Beer Week began with an opening bash at Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint. The well attended event featured 60 brewers in attendance with half from the New York City area. I arrived just after 6PM and it took me about 30 minutes to actually enter the center as the line was over three blocks long.

More photos from the event are now available on BTR here.

The final night of "Interference A.V." took place at AMC Empire 25 in Times Square in New York, NY on Wednesday, February 21, 2018. The event was organized by Clocktower and Times Square Arts and featured live performances by The Sun Ra Arkestra, YATTA, a zine fair and a DJ set from Lea Bertucci. The Sun Ra Arkestra played about 45 minutes past the 10PM curfew and more images are now available on BrooklynVegan here.

I covered the prior nights for BV featuring sets by Jlin, Sadaf, Lightning Bolt and Irreversible Entanglements and those images can be found here and here.

On Tuesday, February 20, 2018, Interference A.V. continued with performances by Irreversible Entanglements (the free jazz ensemble featuring Moor Mother) and Lightning Bolt.

I will admit that it was a little strange to see Lightning Bolt perform in a movie theater but also kind of relaxing. I didn't have to worry about crowd surfers or violent moshing or being shoved into the stage like the last time I shot them during the final night of Death By Audio in November 2014. They were still loud as hell.

Clocktower and Times Square Arts presented a series called "Interference A.V.," a three night event where live music performances and video projections take place in a movie theatre in Times Square.

The first night was held on Monday, February 19, 2018 with sets by Jlin and Sadaf. A zine fair took place in the lobby outside theater #13 where the live music took place.

More images now available on BrooklynVegan here. The series continues tonight with Lightning Bolt & Irreversible Entaglements and tomorrow with The Sun Ra Arkestra and YATTA.

The World's Largest Bagel & Lox at Acme Smoked Fish

On Friday, February 9, 2018, Acme Smoked Fish and Zucker's Bagels teamed up to create the world's largest Bagel & Lox sandwich. Why was this done? Well, it was National Bagel Day and they wanted their attempt to win the Guinness World Record. The completed bagel, which had 40 pounds of cream cheese, 30 pounds of smoked salmon, plus additional layers of tomatoes, onions, and capers came to an impressive 213.75 pounds. Once it was weighed and cut with a saw, it was given away to those who came to support the attempt.

I attended the afternoon event on Friday and a few images from the event appear in the gallery above.

Dave Chappelle pARTy at House of Vans

Comedian Dave Chappelle is in the midst of a 16 show residency at Radio City Music Hall in New York, NY. This residency is commemorating his thirtieth anniversary in comedy. For one night only (Thursday, August 10, 2017), he held a party at House of Vans in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, which was free to attend if you RSVP'd in advance. The evening featured sets by DJs (DJ Trauma, DJ D-Nice, and DJ Stretch Armstrong), live graffiti, and free drinks. There was also surprise set from Brooklyn's own Talib Kweli.

I've managed to spend most of my summer at House of Vans this year and when this show was announced earlier this week, I knew I had to be there. I haven't had the opportunity to photograph Dave over the years but I've been a fan of his comedy for a long time and was in the audience during his last big party in Brooklyn. The images that I captured at HOV last night appear in the gallery above.

Chappelle was billed as a host which meant no stand up comedy but considering those who were there last night got to see him dance and sing along to the music the DJs played, it felt as if we were watching someone who seemed to be letting loose and having the time of his life because he didn't have to work at all that night.

Friends Live at Shea Stadium

On Friday, March 3, Band Practice and Catherine Cohen celebrated the release of Friends Live #1 (which is out now on JMC Aggreggate) with a live show at Shea Stadium. Friends Live #1 was recorded upstairs at Silent Barn in March 2015 and features live comedy from Catherine on one side, and live music from Band Practice (a.k.a. Jeanette Wall) on the other. Helping the two friends celebrate were more of their friends: music from Debbie (Hayley of Human People), Ben Hopkins (of PWR BTTM) and comedy from Sarah Squirm and Ruby McCollister.
